Does A Homeowner Owe Back Taxes If It Is Discovered A Tax Statement On A House Is In Error?
We just noticed our property tax statement (which determines our assessment and thus taxes) has incorrect information about our house. The county property taxes shows a one level house when we have three levels plus it has too little square footage listed. They even lost a couple of rooms and our air conditioning on our tax records! What a mess it is! We don’t know when this happened, but we just noticed it recently. Should we contact our county tax office to get it corrected and if so, will we owe back taxes back to the time someone messed the records up on our house? We may want to sell the house in the next year or two, and our realtor told us it would be better to market if it is corrected. Thanks for any insight or information.
