    Direct Mail services.

Signs, business cards, flyers, direct mailings, etc. I would emphasize price on those advertisements since you probably won’t be available year around to help people during audits or with other problems, and if you aren’t a CPA or EA, you can’t do much for them in an audit anyway. So you have to be a whole lot cheaper than H&R Block for example.

One person had a sign in her front yard (check with your city zoning department). Because she was on a moderately busy street, that pulled in enough traffic to keep her busy. (She was an ex-H&R Block employee) Word of mouth worked for the rest of the time. Also, undercutting H&R’s prices helped.

the other answers pretty much covered it.
but i have found that word of mouth is the best way.
make sure you let your current customers know that you appreciate their business and that referrals would be appreciated too. but never push the issue or seem desparate.
